recycling

Í thought to make a shadowbox using all kinds of packages I saved from trash, so have been recycling big time, here the result

What you need:
 DECO ART Products used:
Americana Acrylics in Red Iron Oxide, Blue Chiffon, Lamp black, Sea Breeze, Nuetral grey
American acrylic Gesso, Texture Crackle, Weathered Wood crackle medium, Triple thick Gloss Glaze. Elegant Finish metallic paint in Medieval Gold.
Deco Art Media : Texture Sand,  Media Fluid Acrylics in Viridian, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.
Dazzling Metallics in Moss Pearl, Amethyst, Shimmering Silver.
Paper effects in Metallic copper and Metallic Lustre in  Iced Espresso

you also need a box like this, this is a typical Dutch Chocolate treat only available in shops When Sinterklaas is in the country (well a few weeks before he gets here you can find them in shops). It;s called a chocolate letter and thi one is by Droste cuz they have the cool package that looks a bit like a book allready. Anyway it was a good excuse to eat the chocolate.

You also need stamps, this is the rubber stamp set designed by Rick St.dennis called Morte, it's available at Smeared Ink.

and you need some Alteration dies from Sizzix /Tim Holtz. I used frozen pizza boxes and the backs of notepads to die cut all things in the book and on the cover. For the bell jar I used acetate from a clear stamp package. I also used a piece of leatherlook carstock for the back and the spine of the book and a piece of burlap. And a sheet of cork paper.

First Gesso the book box , and have som chocolate while you are gessoing, wait till gesso dries (eat more chocolate when waiting, makes it less hard )

Die cut all shapes needed and also Gesso and let Dry.

The front and inside of the bookbox I wanted a crackle look on those, the best ways to show the cracks is to have a dark base that shines through the cracks, so paint the whole box black and every die cut you want to give a crackled look has to be painted black too (there is a song bout painting black, you are allowed to sing it while painting)

While the black is drying, start painting all the parts you want to have a rusty look grey.

when black paint is dry add the texture crackle to the front cover of the box, and the vintage cabinet card. The inside of the book needs a layer of weathered wood, but let the front cover dry and crackle first. set box aside to let the weathered wood dry.

for the rusty parts, add a little texture sand, let dry and create the rust colour by using   Media fluid acrylics in Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

Or Americana Acrylic Iron Oxide and lamp black, I did both versions of rust on the different parts just to see if it would get the same result, it does more or less :-)

The crackle texture should be dry by now so start painting it it the colour you want

The front of the book is Media fluid acrylics in Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

The vintage cabinet card is painted using  Media Fluid Acrylics in Viridianm, Ultramarine Blue and finished with some Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

When the outside of the box is dry, paint the top layer over the weathered wood on the inside, I used a mixture of Blue Chiffon, Sea Breeze, Nuetral grey when dry I used a wash of Lamp black to tone it down a bit

the bottles are painted Dazzling Metallics in Moss Pearl, Amethyst, Shimmering Silver.

the crackle on the bottles is a stamp by Lost coast designs, when dry add a layer of tripple thick gloss glaze, to make them look like glass (I did 2 layers). Let dry and stamp the names on the bottles (clear stamps by House of Three, the halloween set)

stamp the  skulls on the inside of the cover when paint is dry, stamp the vintage cabinet card and colour using pencils. Stamp the skull with candle on a piece of cardstock, colour and cut out.

Glue all parts together and  attache them inside the box
the die cut on the inside cover is embossed first before painting using a Tim Holtz embossing folder

cover the bakc of the book with the leather look cardstock and age it using distress ink (walnut stain and vintage photo) , make the sides of the book lool like pages using Elegant Finish metallic paint in Medieval Gold with an almost dry brush

add some metallic lustre here and there to finish the book

It neede a title and I got inspired by Project life......so this is Project Death
title written with Paper effects in Metallic copper

 that's it :-)

Dragonbook

Another Steampunk project to show you, made for Just Steampunk magazine vol 5.
A lot of pics to show you , this project needs a lot of drying time in between aal layers of paint and varnish,  prepping the book will take some time too.

It's best to start with the inside of the book and add all decoration on the outside last

Making this book took several days, just so you know this is not a quick and easy project to make.
It's a lot of fun to use all the different techniques (thanks Rick for giving some aging tips, you're the best),  you will need some patience :-)
I will try to explain what I did

Supply List

Digital dragon image by Rick St. Dennis MFA

Deco Art products used:
Dazzling Metalics Venetian Gold
American Acrylics, colours: Mocha, Sable Brown, Sand, Lamp black, Traditional Burnt Umber
Americana Gesso, Decoupage, Weathered Wood Crackle Medium, Dura Clear Matte Varnish, Glazing Medium
Elegant finish Metallics  in Renaissance Brown. Metallic Lustres in Iced Espresso, Silver Spark, Copper Kettle, Black Shimmer.

An old book (I used a new one, the one in the pic above, but any book will do) Ruler, Craft knife, Achival Jet Black stamp ink. Gear stamps, I used rubberstamps by Kicostamps (Steampunk plate 1 and 41), embossing pen, Alphabet stamps, Walnut Stain Distress ink, Kitchen towel, old tooth brush, black cardstock and thin card board (cereal box will do fine)

Foam tape, Metal foil tape (hardware store), Ranger Crackle accents, Sizzix Dies; Hardware Findings, Gadget Gears, Elegant Flourishes.
Cuttlebug embosing folder Textile texture, Sizzix Alterations embossing folders Diamond Plate and Riveted Metal

How to:

The dragon (a Rick St. Dennis MFA Digital stamp)

Print the dragon image on sturdy paper, colour (make a laser print colour copy cause you will need the head on the front of the book, and this way you don't have to color it twice)  and cut it out add foam tape to the back and attache it in the shadowbox, (I used distress ink to give the dragon the same aged look as the book after colouring it)

The outside of the book.

First gesso it till you can't see what was on the cover of the book, you need a white background to start with. Let dry.

First layer paint is the gold, when dry add weathered wood crackle medium. Use  Mocha, Sable Brown, Sand acrlic paint and a kitchen towel (make a puff dabb in all three colours and dabb it on the cover to create a marble look) as the top layer for the crackles. Let dry and add 2 layers of Matte Varnish, when dry , make a glaze using traditional burnt umber and Glazing medium, add the glaze on the book using a brush and dabb it off using kitchen towel (make a puff again) next layer is the glaze but use the kitchen towel puffs to add it this time. Keep doing this till you like result. Let dry.
Next add some lamp black to the glaze and use a tooth brush to splatter some of the glaze on the book, carful use a fine spatter. Let dry. Add 2 layers of matte varnish (let dry in between layers) to protect the paint.

Die cut all the gears and other parts using the card board, emboss them and paint them black, then use metallic lustres to give them a metal look. Take the piece of black cardstock cut to size to be able to make a frame and emboss, use the metallic lustres to age.
The colour copy dragon, cut out the head in a way it will fit in the frame you made. add glossy accents crackle to the dragon image, let dry, age with distress ink. Use foam tape to adde the frame to the dragon image and make it a bit more sturdy by adding it to a piece of cardboard, use foam tape to attache to the book cover. Add the embellisments (gears, flowers, hinges) Decorate the hinges on the spine with some pearls or rhinestones.

The inside of the book

there should be some pages on the side oposite to the shadow box that will be cut out of the pages of the book. decide howmany you want on that side, glue the pages where you will be cutting the hole in on the 3 sides of the paper using Decoupage, make sure the pages stay together when drying use clamps for that.

do the same with the pages on the otherside of the book

When glue is dry and pages stick together start cutting out a hole to to create the shadow box, use a ruler and craftknife.
when done glue the pages on the inside of the hole same way as you did on the outside

use metal tape on the pages to create a metal look, use ruler and embossing pen to make the riveted metal look, when done add lampblack acrylic using a sponge, not to much, go for a mottled look by dabbing the sponge on the metal tape. Let dry.

Stamp the quote using Archival Jet black and paint them over using lamp black acrylic paint, when dry stamp the border using the gear stamps.

Age the sides of the book using lamp black and Metallic Glaze in Renaissance Brown

this was the dragon before it was cut out and distressed

Fresh Blood, HDH challenge

I've got some exciting news, I am a DT Minion at Haunted Design House, how cool it that?? (well actually it's very cold in the Dungeon, cold and dark...and scary). Today the challenges start again and the first theme is "Fresh Blood" I made a shadow box, containing a bottle of fresh blood ofcourse, a lot of pics, hope you like

DecoArt products used:
Americana Acrylics: tomato red, antique teal, traditional burnt umber
Elegant finishes: medieval gold, emperors gold, reinansanse brown
Metallic Lustres : iced esspresso and champaigne ice

I started out with this

 a wooden book box
with bows on the outside LOL and a plastic toy mask (lucky to have a son with a love for scary toys, now too old to play with them , now I get to play with it)  And a lock that came from a tea box.
and turned it into this

Lots of layers of paint and metallic lustres to get the mask to look like this, added some bling in the eyes, just for fun
made the sides of the book look like it really has pages, using gesso and paints
the back of the book, tried to give it an aged look using Weathered wood crackle mediium and different layers of Americana Acrylic paint
the spine of the book is coverd with paper, the leatherlook was allready there, I just aged it using ink and metallic Lustres
the inside cover, stamped and aged using distress inks, that blood could be real though, you never know.......

the inside, the box is painted gold, using Elegaant finish metallic paint in different colors gold.
the skullies and hands are clear stamps, I used archival jet balck ink to stamp them on the painted wood. The bell jar is a Tim holtz die, the bottle was a small vinager bottle. the blood is left over blood from my daughters Halloween party :-) (handy to have kids with supplies). Added some roses (tim holtz die) and a vampire teeth charm

here some more pics

Hope you like my first project, now get over to the Haunted Design House blog for more inspiration by the other talented minions. I can't wait to see your entries in the Fresh Blood challenge
