Altered chocolate box

I have altered a chocolate box, these boxes used to have chocolate letters in them and they are sorta book shaped, unfortunately they are only availabel in shops in november and december for Sinterklaas. I saved the boxes of all the leters my famely has gotten in theirs shoes (yep Sinterklaas puts prezzies in your shoe)

There are before and after pictures, so you can see what the box looked like, cuz it is a typical Dutch thing i guess lol

Deco Art products used:

Deco Art Media fluid acrylics in : Cobalt Turquoise hue, Quinacridome gold, Transparent yellow Iron Oxide, English Red Oxide, Paynes Grey, Pyrrole Red.

Antiquing cream in Carbon Black, Gesso, Matte Varnish.Deco Art Media Texture Sand paste,  Deco art Media Crackle paint and  Modeling Paste in black, Americana Weathered wood crackle medium, Americana acrylics in : Sand, Sable Brown, Mocha, Lamp Black, Traditional Burnt Umber, Sweet Mint, Snow White, Driftwood, Glazing Meium. Triple Thick Gloss Glaze, Elegant Finish Metallic Paint in Emperors Gold, Texture Fierro in Iron Black, Deco Art Metallic Lusttres in Iced Espresso, Gold Rush, Radiant Red, Copper Kettle, and Black Shimmer .

Andy Skinner Industrial stampset, Sizzix Thinlets mixed Media #2, Alterations embossing folder, Alterations: Elegant Flourishes, Heart Wings, Layered Wings, Tattered Florals, Vintage Cabinet Card, Mini Cabinet card, Sizzix Love Gears, Noor design gear dies.

Gesso all parts of the box inside and out , next die cut all all chipboard parts, the wings, heart flowers etc. and gesso them too.

Treat the winkgs and the top part of the heart and  the tray inside the box with the Andy Skinner rust technique. The flowers and Flourishes, small hearts and gears need layers of metallic lusttres to create the metal look, some need a base layer of black paint, the small gears were made of black cardstock so just the lustres work on them.

Make a mask out of the thinlet dies and use modeling paste to make the flourishes on the left top and right bottom of the cover

Paint the outside of the box in emperors gold, let dry and add weathered wood. When dry use a puff made out of papertowel and dabb Americana acrylic in Sand, Mocha and Sadle brown in circular motion to create a marble effect.Work fast and don't put on too much paint because you want the gold to show through in the crackle.

Next make a glaze of Tradtional burnt umber and glazing medium, add to cover and remove before completly dry using a paper towel, play with it till you like the result. next add black to the glaze and use a tooth brush (an old one ofcourse lol) to splatter some paint on the cover. Varnish when paint is dry.

use metallic lustre and a sponge to add some gold to the modeling paste flourishes

 the tag can be opened and I handwrote this sentiment on the inside

the inside on the left is made using patterned papers and the right side is cardboard painted in Drift wood and sweet mint, used the Andy skinner stamps to get the aged effect and added soem text stamp

The letter are wood, also rusted with the Andy Technique.  The frame is the cabinet card die the small and the big one , used several layers to create depth, and covered it in Texture Fierro.

The inside of the frame is painted in Sand and has XO's stamped on it, also used the crackle stamp by Andy Skinner to give it a crackle effect.

the hearts ar rusted wire, they where send to me by a friend, so no idea where they can be bought.

Next assemble the book and decorate the front.

Rust the wings and used red media fluid and crackle paint to paint and crackle the heart, use antiquing cream to get the crackles out and protect with triple thick gloss glaze.

Glue all die cuts to the book

try to make the side look a bit like pages using gold and traditional burnt umber paint

recycling

Í thought to make a shadowbox using all kinds of packages I saved from trash, so have been recycling big time, here the result

What you need:

 DECO ART Products used:
Americana Acrylics in Red Iron Oxide, Blue Chiffon, Lamp black, Sea Breeze, Nuetral grey
American acrylic Gesso, Texture Crackle, Weathered Wood crackle medium, Triple thick Gloss Glaze. Elegant Finish metallic paint in Medieval Gold.
Deco Art Media : Texture Sand,  Media Fluid Acrylics in Viridian, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.
Dazzling Metallics in Moss Pearl, Amethyst, Shimmering Silver.
Paper effects in Metallic copper and Metallic Lustre in  Iced Espresso

you also need a box like this, this is a typical Dutch Chocolate treat only available in shops When Sinterklaas is in the country (well a few weeks before he gets here you can find them in shops). It;s called a chocolate letter and thi one is by Droste cuz they have the cool package that looks a bit like a book allready. Anyway it was a good excuse to eat the chocolate.

You also need stamps, this is the rubber stamp set designed by Rick St.dennis called Morte, it's available at Smeared Ink.

and you need some Alteration dies from Sizzix /Tim Holtz. I used frozen pizza boxes and the backs of notepads to die cut all things in the book and on the cover. For the bell jar I used acetate from a clear stamp package. I also used a piece of leatherlook carstock for the back and the spine of the book and a piece of burlap. And a sheet of cork paper.

First Gesso the book box , and have som chocolate while you are gessoing, wait till gesso dries (eat more chocolate when waiting, makes it less hard )

Die cut all shapes needed and also Gesso and let Dry.

The front and inside of the bookbox I wanted a crackle look on those, the best ways to show the cracks is to have a dark base that shines through the cracks, so paint the whole box black and every die cut you want to give a crackled look has to be painted black too (there is a song bout painting black, you are allowed to sing it while painting)

While the black is drying, start painting all the parts you want to have a rusty look grey.

when black paint is dry add the texture crackle to the front cover of the box, and the vintage cabinet card. The inside of the book needs a layer of weathered wood, but let the front cover dry and crackle first. set box aside to let the weathered wood dry.

for the rusty parts, add a little texture sand, let dry and create the rust colour by using   Media fluid acrylics in Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

Or Americana Acrylic Iron Oxide and lamp black, I did both versions of rust on the different parts just to see if it would get the same result, it does more or less :-)

The crackle texture should be dry by now so start painting it it the colour you want

The front of the book is Media fluid acrylics in Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt turquoise hue. Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

The vintage cabinet card is painted using  Media Fluid Acrylics in Viridianm, Ultramarine Blue and finished with some Antiquing Cream in Carbon Black.

When the outside of the box is dry,paint the top layer over the weathered wood on the inside, I used a mixture of Blue Chiffon, Sea Breeze, Nuetral grey when dry I used a wash of Lamp black to tone it down a bit

the bottles are painted Dazzling Metallics in Moss Pearl, Amethyst, Shimmering Silver.

the crackle on the bottles is a stamp by Lost coast designs, when dry add a layer of tripple thick gloss glaze, to make them look like glass (I did 2 layers). Let dry and stamp the names on the bottles (clear stamps by House of Three, the halloween set)

 stamp the  skulls on the inside of the cover when paint is dry, stamp the vintage cabinet card and colour using pencils. Stamp the skull with candle on a piece of cardstock, colour and cut out.

Glue all parts together and  attache them inside the box

 the die cut on the inside cover is embossed first before painting using a Tim Holtz embossing folder

 cover the bakc of the book with the leather look cardstock and age it using distress ink (walnut stain and vintage photo) , make the sides of the book lool like pages using Elegant Finish metallic paint in Medieval Gold with an almost dry brush

 add some metallic lustre here and there to finish the book

   It neede a title and I got inspired by Project life......so this is Project Death
title written with Paper effects in Metallic copper

today I have 2 projects to share,

first my (almost) daily Art Journal page.
The backround is again a Gelli print, used a Sizzix die to mask and some stencils.
The paint used is Deco Art Americana acrylics (colours: sour apple, true red, lamp black).
The image used is a Rick St.Dennis digi, he's is called Phineus Pucker and I think he is kinda lost in a scary place.

 

the second is a tag,  and this is what I used

Deco Arts Americana Acrylic (Lime Yellow, Lavender, Spice pumpkin, Lamp black)
i used the Metallic Lustre (black shimmer) on the ribbon

I painted the tag lamp black and stamped the images with Lavender, Lime Yellow and Spiced Pumkin, around the edges is some Lavender

SNS DT throwdown challenge Tooth and Claw

Yay we are in again in this month SNS DT Throwdown  challenge,  the theme tooth and claw, has been chosen by the winner of the last challenge:

Quoth the Raven challenge blog, yay well done and big congrats to you.

For this challenge the Airless Chambers team is : Helen, Miranda and me (Monique), we had to do a bit of thinking for this one, but we all came up with something, Rick provided us with the images needed and we were ready to go.

here is my project,which turned out a lot bigger and much more work than I had planned,  it's an Alice in Wonderland themed  curiousity cabinet,  with a bite (LOL)

let's start with some pics and then i will tell you how i made it.

I started out with two of these (plain wooden tea boxes)

I changed the size of the inside boxes cause  I didn't want them all to be the same size, and then painted and aged it using this

when the  painting was done i added the hinges (TH die) and the lock plate (7 gypsies) the doorknobs are made of buttons, there are 5 buttons ( 1 jeans button and the others are normal buttons) on each doorknob is a rhinestone that way the holes of the buttons aren't visible

then i had to create an Alice scene in the inside of both doors

for door 1 I asked Rick if he could draw me an alice with a butcher knife in one hand and the mad hatters head in the other hand.  He did wonder how this was going to fit the theme but faster then the speed of light I got the image I asked for. The doodles in the background are drawn by me, if you like them, you can get yours here  :-)

door 2, has the cheshire monster cat and the zombie rabbit and a head that belonged to another RSD image (it was allready chopped of a body, I didn't do that lol) and there is also the cheshire tree (TH Die), and a drink me bottle (with lizzard).

then i had to fill all the little boxes inside

first there are the eat me shrooms, cute hey?

then the twinkle twinkle little bat (sorry for the bat pic LOL)

some chess pieces

a blood white rabbit (and they eat heads, not carrots LOL)

the cards, that painted the roses red (poor things they lost their heads, o well more bunny food)

and i can't help wondering is it paint or is it blood??  I guess we'll never know,it's  hard to speak without your head

some keys and the King and the Queen of Hearts, O,  and  also some teeth ...

A tea party , without the hatter I'm afraid, poor guy lost his head (and you all thought Alice was such a sweet little girl, you were wrong ....)

(btw i added the card symbols to a the tiny tea set using permanent markers, it's a bit hard to draw on the round surface, but it worked

In the last little boxes , the pocket watch and a tart, what's a tea party without a tart?
